As social housing providers, we work with a vulnerable client group with limited support and community connections. We have a moral obligation and a duty of care to act when we are concerned about a tenant's welfare.

Tenants may be vulnerable or at risk due to factors within the home as well as external events, as demonstrated by the recent Pandemic, extreme weather events or disasters including bushfires.

It's important to be able to identify those risk factors early so that we can pre-empt client vulnerabilities. When we act quickly and undertake preventative welfare checks, we can signpost the tenant for support to prevent an issue from arising.

If you have concerns for someone's safety and you're unable to confirm they are OK, maybe it's an elderly resident who hasn't been seen recently, maybe it's a tenant with serious concerns for their mental health, it may be time to contact the Police to do a physical welfare check.

This workshop provides staff with an understanding of the requirements to perform welfare checks, how to dientify when they are required and best practice tools to perform them.
